Ultrasound can help doctors investigate symptoms, monitor pregnancy, assess blood flow, guide medical procedures, and examine many parts of the body in real time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ultrasound is generally safe, noninvasive, accessible, and relatively inexpensive<\/strong>, but its usefulness depends on the body area being examined, the equipment, and the skill of the person performing and interpreting the scan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Does Ultrasound Work?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An ultrasound machine uses a handheld device called a <strong>transducer<\/strong> or probe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The transducer sends high-frequency sound waves into the body. These waves travel through tissues and reflect differently when they encounter fluid, organs, muscles, blood vessels, or other structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The transducer detects the returning echoes. The clinician should explain the procedure and obtain appropriate consent before beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Ultrasound Safe?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Diagnostic ultrasound does not use ionizing radiation. It therefore does not carry the same radiation-related risks as X-rays or CT examinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US Food and Drug Administration reports that medical ultrasound has an excellent safety record when used appropriately. However, ultrasound energy can interact with tissue, so the FDA recommends that examinations be performed prudently by trained healthcare professionals and only for a medical purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is particularly important during pregnancy.
